The Panasonic TC-PVT30 is the new plasma flagship model from Panasonic. It features a slim one-sheet-of-class design which covers the whole front panel (both the screen and the bezel), an improved Infinite Black Pro 2 panel and a new Smart TV interface with Viera Connect and Viera Market. Panasonic has also slimmed down their VT30 to be about as thin as Samsung’s plasma TVs. It is available in 55-inch and in 65-inch.
The single pane of glass which covers the front panel eliminates the depth difference between the frame and the screen, and adds a very nice aesthetic appeal to the TV. The style is also complimented by a thin silver line along the extreme edge of the frame which offsets the glossy black. The bezel is not as thin and the glossy stand not as small as Samsung’s LED televisions, but it still has a nice design.
The Good
Image Quality
The PVT30 has outstanding overall picture quality. Superior black-level performance produces deep blacks which create vivid and intense pictures and very high shadow detail. The advantage of plasma over LED is the nearly perfect screen uniformity, and similar to LED the PVT30 plasma has very good 3D picture quality.
Panasonic has worked on reducing reflections in their PVT30 plasma series, which means the TV has a very good filter and will display well in brightly lit rooms without much glare.
Features
The PVT30 does include an Internet suite which is simple to use, though not quite as content rich as some of the Samsung TVs, and it also ships with one pair of 3D glasses and a Wi-Fi dongle. Included are Netflix, Amazon Instant, Facebook, YouTube, Pandora, Skype (optional), Twitter, CinemaNow, Napster, several sports widgets, a couple of games, and several other applications. It does not include a Web browser or Hulu Plus.
The Bad
Energy Usage
Some might contest that the PVT30 does not feature as great of color as some other plasmas, but the only downside we would suggest taking note of is that this TV uses significantly more power than LCD TVs. This TV will cost you two to three times as much on your energy bill than say the Samsung UN55D8000 LED.
Overall Rating
Picture quality is beautiful on the PVT30. It will not disappoint you. Color accuracy is excellent, although color gradation could use improvement. But with superb all-around picture quality and deep black levels, the Panasonic TC-PVT30 series is without question one of the best-performing TVs of 2011. It does not quite have the content-rich features of some of Samsung’s newer plasmas and LED TVs, but if you want the best picture quality regardless of price, the Panasonic TC-PVT30 is the way to go. We rate it a 4.5 out of 5.
